| OUR BABY IS HERE!!!!! On October 26th, my wife and I had a baby girl. She weighed 8 pounds and was 20.3 inches long. She is a big baby. She was born at 12:30. Her name is Elisa Akie. Elisa is a shortened form of Elizabeth, meaning "dedicated to God". Her middle name, Akie (秋恵 for those of you who can see Japanese fonts), is Japanese and means "Autumn Blessing". Elisa was born at 42 weeks and one day. It was quite an ordeal for my wife (also for me to a lesser extent). In Japan they typically wait for two weeks before they attempt to induce labor. As my wife was late and only dialated 1cm, the doctor decided to admit her into the hospital on the 23rd to induce. So, on the 23rd we went into the hospital expecting to see our baby in a day or two. I decided to take that day and the next off work to be with Hazuki when the baby was born. After ariving at the hospital, we found out that they were not going to induce that day, just make the cervix 'ripe'. They said they would induce the next day. Day two arrived and from the morning I could hear women's screams. Five women went into labor that day so they decided they didn't have the manpower to induce labor that day. They decided to induce the next day. Day three arrived and they finally decided to induce. After 25 hours of labor, Elisa was born. A beautiful baby if I ever saw one. Five days later she came home (this is SOP in Japan). She has been at home with us since then sleeping, eating, crying, pooping and generally making her parents feel all warm and happy inside. She is slowly getting bigger and heavier. She also makes a lot of different facial expressions, especially when pooping. Probably, at this point, she can't control the expressions, but when she makes smiling expressions it's almost enough to make one cry. She's great and we are extremely happy and blessed parents. | Okay, so I'm not actually a parent yet, but the troubles have already begun. Currently my wife is pregnant and has already passed the half-way mark. This means that she can pretty much feel the baby moving all the time. However, I don't get to feel the baby move.
The problem isn't that the movements are too light at the moment (though that might also be true). The problem is that the baby will move non-stop, so Hazuki will tell me to touch her belly to feel the baby and the moment I put my hand on her the baby stops moving. I take my hand away and the baby moves again. I just don't understand.
Now, this isn't only relegated to feeling Hazuki's belly, it's also ultrasounds. We've had several ultrasounds for various reasons. Whenever Haz gets to watch the monitor for the ultrasound she comes home saying how much the baby was moving. I get the feeling our baby is a budding gymnast. However, the only time I've not had to work when she was going to the doctor and was therefore able to see the ultrasound. . . complete stillness.
The baby has not even been born and already s/he has learned the vital art of ignoring his/her father.
Really though, I'm just somewhat envious of my wife. She gets to see the baby move on the ultrasounds and she can feel the baby moving all the time. I wish I could feel the baby too. However, I think in about two months that envy will be over and I will be happy I don't have to go through all the discomfort. But for now I'm jealous.
On a related note: A friend over here has suggested that premature ignoring of its father indicates that our baby is probably a boy. I'm not quite sure how or why that works, but we'll see.
Until then I shall try to steathily put my hand on my wife's belly and catch our baby off-gaurd. | | |
| Hello all you people who might happen upon my blog,
My name is Todd, I'm from the great state of Washington and currently reside in Japan. I teach English to youths and enjoy living out in the boon-docks of Japan.
I don't know what the subjects of this blog will be. Most likely work, religion, personal or whatever else comes to mind. (I guess that covers about any possible topic.)
Hope you enjoy. | | |
